Measurement
Chunnu, the monkey had a garden. He had a water connection at one corner.
He opened the tap to water the trees. But it flooded the whole garden.
One day his friend Funky, the fox came to meet him.
Why do you not buy a rubber pipe to water the trees?
Chunnu agreed. But how long the pipe should be?
Funky take a metre tape and measured the distance of each tree from the tap. It
was different, 6 m, 7 m, 8 m and 9 m.
They decided to take it one metre more than the greatest 9 m.
They bought a 10 m long rubber pipe. Chunnu fixed its one end to the tap, took
the other end in his hand and went to the tree to be watered.
UNIT OF LENGTH
In old times people used their body parts to measure length of things.
Handspan, cubit and footspan were such units. But their sizes were different for
different persons. So handspan, cubit and footspan were not standard units of
measurement.
Standard unit is same for every person used by and acceptable to all.
Standard unit of length is metre.
For measuring small things, we use a smaller unit centimetre.
1 metre = 100 centimetre 1 m = 100 cm In short
A larger unit of length for measuring distances is kilometre.
1 kilometre = 1000 metre 1 km = 1000 m In short
