            MEASUREMENT OF LENGTH BY A RULER

            A ruler has a length of 15 cm divided into 15 equal centimetres. To measure

            smaller things we use ruler.

            For example, to measure the length of a line segment, we place the zero mark of
            the ruler on the left end of the line segment and the edge of the ruler along the

            line segment. Then we read the mark of the ruler at the right end of the line

            segment.

            The length of the above line is 8 centimetre. It is also written as 8 cm.


            USE TO DIFFERENT UNITS TO MEASURE DIFFERENT THINGS

            To measure small things like pencil, notebook, etc. we use centimetre (cm). To

            measure the length of cloth, room, etc. we use metre (m).
            To measure distance between two cities we use kilometre (km). Some estimated

            lengths are given below:



                       Length of an eraser/sharpener                           about 3 cm


                       Length of a pen                                         about 10 cm or 15 cm


                       Length of a crayon                                      about 6 cm
