Addition of 4-Digit Numbers (with carry)

When we add ones, the sum may be more than 10 ones. So we regroup 10 ones

into one tens. Then we keep ones in over column and carry tens to tens column.
Similarly we regroup 10 tens to 1 hundred and 10 hundreds to 1 thousand.

Example: Add 4974 and 3257 :

Solution: (a) 4 ones + 7 ones = 11 ones

Regroup 11 ones = 1 tens + 1 one

carry over 1 ten to the ten column. 4 9 7 4

(b) 1 ten (carried) + 7 tens + 5 tens = 13 tens

Regroup 13 tens = 1 hundred + 3 tens

Write 3 tens in the ones column

carry over 1 hundred to the hundreds column.

(c) 1 hundred (carried) + 9 hundreds + 2 hundreds = 12 hundreds

Regroup 12 hundreds = 1 thousand + 2 hundreds

Write 2 hundreds in the hundreds column.

carry over 1 thousand to the thousands column

(d) 1 thousand (carried) + 4 thousands + 3 thousands = 8 thousands
