TALLY MARKS
To represent data with small number we draw a pictograph. For data with large
numbers it is not practical to draw a number of pictures. So we draw tally marks
to represent such number.
A tally mark is a vertical line. We draw one vertical line for one observation.
After four vertical lines, for the fifth observation, we draw a line crossing the
four vertical lines.
Example: Tom and Jerry went to a park with their friends. There they saw a
variety of animals.
sparrow rat parrot sparrow dog crow
parrot rat sparrow squirrel rat crow
squirrel parrot sparrow rat squirrel rat
sparrow dog squirrel parrot sparrow sparrow
parrot dog squirrel crow rat crow
Classify the data using tally marks and answer the questions.
(a) Which animal was the greatest of number in the park?
(b) Which animal was the least of number in the park?
(c) How many sparrows were than the squirrel?
(d) Which birds were equal in number?
Solution:
Animals Tally marks Number of animals
sparrow 7
rat 8
parrot 5
