POINT

A point has a definite position or location in space. It has no length, breadth or
thickness. A fine dot (.) made by a sharp pencil represents a point.

            We use a capital letter as A, B, ..... P, Q, ..... to name a point.

            LINE SEGMENT

A straight path from a point to another point is called a line segment.

To make a straight path, we join two points on a paper with the help of a ruler.

Mark two points A and B on a piece of paper. Join the point A to the point B

with the help of a ruler. Thus we obtain the line segment AB.

                                         A B

A and B are called the end points of the line segment AB.
A line segment has a definite (fixed) length. The distance between the end

points of the line segment is called the length of the line segment. We can

measure this length with a ruler.

            LINE

If we extend a line segment say XY endlessly in both the direction, we obtain a
line. To show extension, we put arrow heads on both the sides.

                                                        X Y

A line her no end point. It her no definite (fixed) length and cannot be

measured. Since a line can be extended endlessly, we cannot draw a line on a
paper fully, so we put arrow on both the sides to show its extension.

            TYPES OF LINES

In daily life we call a line segment as line for practical purposes.

A line may be straight or curved when we
join two points with the help of a ruler, we A B

            get a straight line.
