Reminder

            If the dividend is not completely divisible by the divisor, then a number is left
            over after dividing. This left over number is called the remainder. It is always

            less than the divisor.

            Mother had 17 sweets. She distributed the sweets in 5 children of her

            neighborhoods. Mother gave 3 sweets to each. Thus 15 sweets were given by
            equal grouping. What is the remainder?

                                     17 – 15 = 2 sweets were left. These sweets

                                     were remainder.

            There is a relationship between divided divisor, quotient and remainder.

                                 Dividend = Divisor × Quotient + Remainder

                                       17      =      5      ×       3       +        2

            Properties of Division

            1. If a non-zero number is divided by itself the quotient is1.

                   For example           56 ÷ 56 = 1              475 ÷ 475 = 3               3654 ÷ 3654 = 1

            2. If a number is divided by 1, the quotient is the number itself.

                   For example,          75 ÷ 1 = 75              784 ÷ 1 = 784               5321 ÷ 1 = 5321

            3. If zero is divided by any non-zero number, the quotient is 0.

                   For example,          47 ÷ 0 = 0               834 ÷ 0 = 0                 0 ÷ 9536 = 0
